After months of anticipation, we reveal the three winners of the Outlook Inspiration Awards. We asked three distinguished judges to choose the Outlook guests whose actions moved them, shook them, or thrilled them most.
The judges were: Frank Gardner the BBC's Security Correspondent, the American actor and Time's Up campaigner Tessa Thompson, and incoming Secretary General of Amnesty Kumi Naidoo.
“The audience was in for a special surprise. Rachel Espersen of Lexus announced that based on the strength of the finalists, two brands would be awarded prizes this year. Cienne’s Nicole Heim and Chelsea Healy were commended for their outstanding progress throughout the program, and their brand was named runner-up”
“When she was 8, not long after losing both her parents, Nice Nailantei Leng'ete ran away from her village in Kenya to avoid "the cut," the traditional Maasai practice of female genital mutilation that transforms girls into eligible brides. Today, the 27-year-old is working to help thousands of other girls escape cutting and forced marriage, so they can stay in school and pursue their dreams. Time has named Leng'ete one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2018. Here, she tells Health she’s just getting started.”
“This is about the countless girls, women, boys, men, and elders all over Kenya and Africa who dare today are working to bring female genital mutilation and child marriage to an end,” said TIME 100 honoree and Kenyan women’s rights activist Nice Nailantei Leng’ete during the TIME 100 Gala Tuesday night.”
“But saving herself was not enough. As an adult, she has gone on to negotiate with village elders, who traditionally have not worked with women, and convince them that alternative coming-of-age ceremonies will be healthier for girls and better for communities. Her work as a project officer with Amref Health Africa has saved an estimated 15,000 girls around Kenya from the cut, as well as from child marriage.”
“We started about two years ago and our goal was to have ethics and aesthetics co-exist simultaneously and to build that into everything that we do. We have been on that quest to redefine the narrative around responsible fashion and what that looks like and means for our brand.”
